Courses
Graduate students are required to take the core Anthropology courses listed below, along with courses specific to their subfield. Jump to archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistic anthropology courses.

Core Courses
- Anthro 401 (1,2,3,4) The Logic of Inquiry in Anthropology
- Anthro 496 "Bridging Seminar"
- One Anthro Course in Formal Methods
- Anthro 519 "Responsible Conduct of Research"
Archaeology Student Courses
In addition to the above CORE requirements, Archaeology students are required to take the following:
- Anthro 322 "Introduction to Archaeological Research Design and Methods"
- Anthro 431 “Writing for impact in the social sciences” spring quarter of 2nd year
- Anthro 432 “Research design and proposal writing” fall quarter of 3rd year
- Anthro 490 "Topics" Archaeology graduate students are to take at least three graduate-level Topics courses (Anthro 490), and are strongly encouraged to take all of the graduate level 490 courses in archaeology offered during their first two to three years in the program.
All Students must also demonstrate knowledge and field & laboratory methods.
Biological Anthropology Student Courses
In addition to the above CORE requirements, Biological Anthropology students are required to take the following:
- Anthro 386 “Methods in Human Biology Research”
- Anthro 425 “Human Population Biology”
- Anthro 426 “Primate Diversity”
- Anthro 431 “Writing for impact in the social sciences” spring quarter of 2nd year
- Anthro 432 “Research design and proposal writing” fall quarter of 3rd year
- Anthro 486 “Evolution and Biological Anthropology”
- At least one quarter of statistics (course at the discretion of students and advisor)
Biological students are also required to take at least one (and preferably) two quarters of statistics, which can be fulfilled through the Anthropology Department or elsewhere (e.g., Sociology, public health, SESP).
Cultural Anthropology Student Courses
In addition to the above CORE requirements, Cultural Anthropology students are required to take the following:
- Anthro 361 “Talk as Social Action/Linguistic Methods”
- Anthro 460 (number pending) “Ethnographic Methods”
- Anthro 462 “Ethnographic Writing”
- Anthro 470 “History of Anthropological Theory”
- Anthro 471 “History of Anthropological Theory II”
- Anthro 475 “Seminar in Contemporary Theory”
- Anthro 483 “Seminar in Contemporary Linguistic Theory”
- Anthro 484 “Seminar in Linguistic Anthropology”
Linguistic Anthropology Student Courses
In addition to the above CORE requirements, Linguistic Anthropology students are required to take:
